Description: The Empire Backpackers is a restored historic hotel, built in 1867. We are located in the centre of Oamaru, next to the I-site. We are well known for being central, clean, cosy and comfortable 'Just like home.' There are 2 large lounges, one with TV and a roaring log fire and one with 3 computers for guests use, wi fi and complimentary 1 hr. Heated bedrooms, bed side lamp and endless hot water in the showers. Friendly informative staff to help make your stay memorable.
We are part of the Historic Precinct and 10-minute walk to Little Blue Penguins. Sometimes they walk to us.
Oamaru is situated between Christchurch and Dunedin. People often come across us by accident and find Oamaru to be a real treasure.
Guests can walk to our famous Little Blue Penguins (sometimes they walk to us), Yellow Eyed Penguins, collection of Victorian Oamaru Stone Buildings (the Empire Hotel being one of them) walkways, beautiful magnificent Public Gardens, Cheese Factory (with delish Cheese cake), Dutch bakery, beaches, plus much more.
We are surrounded by restaurants, cafes, bars, shops and close to a supermarket.
Make the Empire your base to explore the surrounding district: Moeraki boulders, Waitaki Valley, Elephant Rocks (The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was filmed here), Vanished World Trail with its dinosaur fossils, Graves Track to Pillow Lava, plus much more. Book extra nights as there is so much to see and do.
