Monkey Lodge is located within the North-eastern Caribbean Wetland. Wetlands are natural sites characterized by the presence of water, either permanent or temporarily. When a wetland has unique characteristics or it is important for the conservation of biological diversity, is called a RAMSAR SITE or of international importance. The North-eastern Caribbean Wetland was declared RAMSAR SITE # 811 in 1998, based on the following: • It is a representative example of the wetlands typical of the Costa Rican Caribbean coast. • It is estimated that it provides a place for feeding and rest for more than a million resident and migratory water birds annually. • It is the habitat of several endangered species of plants and animals. Four of the eight species of marine turtles that exist, come to the Tortuguero National Park . There it is one of the most important nesting beaches for the green turtle ( Chelonia mydas ), and it is visited by leatherback (( Dermochelys coriaceae ), hawksbill ( Eretmochelys imbricata ) and loggerhead ( Caretta caretta ) turtles too. It is also the habitat of the caribbean manatee, a herbivore mammal adapted to aquatic life. • It is the breeding area of several fish species important for the fisheries of the Caribbean coast. • Is the habitat of several endangered species of plants and animals. Four of the eight species of marine turtles that exist, come to the Tortuguero National Park . The property is crossed by water channels that belong to the Penitencia Lagoon, which is identify with the code 320 according to the Costa Rican Wetland Inventory (IUCN, 1998) . It is located in a life zone known as Very Humid Tropical Forest . Besides the scenic beauty and biodiversity that it holds, the area is important as a buffer ecosystem during flooding. The wetlands play a very important role in the water cycle, specially regulating water flows. In Monkey Lodge, you will walk through a swampy forest, interrupted by narrow, dark water channels.
